The convective removal of heat from a surface can be substantially improved if we put extensions on that surface to increase its area. This extensions can take a variety of forms and are called fins, which can be integral, extruded or welded to the tube. By increasing heat transfer rate, the total number of tubes required in an application can be reduced, resulting in a reduction of equipment size and cost. Fins are very sturdy and resistant to mechanical stress and can therefore be cleaned easily by steam or water. Evidence suggests that the strange row of fins on the back of the Stegosaurus were used to shed excess body heat after strenuous activity, which is consistent with suspicions that Stegosaurus were warm-blooded.
